Roy Roomes 002

We were deeply saddened to learn about the recent passing of Roy Roomes – a highly respected and much loved member of our Walking for Health/Wellbeing Walks team.

Roy helped found our popular Walks Programme here in Havering in 2003. Roy was an extremely passionate, enthusiastic and supportive man. He recognised the benefits of walking and then went on to encourage so many others to come along, enjoy the outdoors, learn about the fantastic green spaces we have available and make some new friends along the way. Many of our current Walk Leaders credit Roy in getting them to join the scheme describing him as welcoming, warm and inspirational.

Not only was Roy a brilliant Walk Leader, but he also set up many charity events and worked hard to raise money from our organised Charity Walks for the likes of the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, Diabetes UK and First Steps.

Without Roy’s efforts over the last 19 years the Havering Walks programme would not be as successful as it is today.

We send our heartfelt condolences to Roy’s family during this difficult time. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten.

We finished the year 2021 off with a BANG!

Haverings Sports Development Christmas HAF Programme funded by Department of Education saw over 80 children +11yrs per day enjoying the variety of FREE healthy activities and food available for 4 days during the build-up of Christmas.

The programme targets those entitled to free school meals and low-income families in the borough.

We enjoyed seeing over 320 children during the 4 day build up before Christmas enjoying sports, art, local outings such as Jump Evolution, Bowling, Theatre and so much more.

They seemed to of enjoyed it too:

“This has been amazing for keeping my daughter entertained, making new friends and keeping active. Keep up the fantastic work guys. Thank you”

“Well organised, very professional, very friendly. My kids absolutely loved coming to the Xmas camps…”

We hope to secure more funding to deliver in the Easter, Summer and Christmas period 2022 so watch this space!

A BIG THANK YOU to our partners RDF Sports and ROYALS Youth Centre in helping making this happen and to all the families who joined us!

Do not wait until Easter to join us again check out our weekly sessions and look out for our coming half term holiday activities.

Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you all in 2022!
